Richter City Roller Derby Presents: Triple Header

Richter City Roller Derby Presents: Triple Header

16 April · 18:00 - 21:00
TSB Bank Arena, Wellington

"To kick the 2011 home season off with a BANG, Richter City brings you a one off special night of roller derby you will never forget!

Three short, sharp and fast games featuring established Richter City favourites Brutal Pageant and Smash Malice, as well as the introduction of an exciting new third home team, filled with crowd favourites and new faces." - Richter city's event page.

I decided to cheer for Brutal Pageant again this year (because I love their outfits, and a couple of my fave players are on the team). Alex however jumped ship and now supports the new team Comic Slams (because their name is a funny play on the awful font, plus hey, superhero/comic book themed) so we have forgiven her.

Brutal did not do as well this year and they did in 2010, but I will still LOVE them. Comic Slams were the winners for the night, but all the games were very close.

Lots of fun (as always).

Richter City All Stars vs. the Sydney Assassins.

How cool is it that Wellington hosted the first ever international derby game to be played in New Zealand! That is freaking awesome! Even better, we went down for the day to see it! Yay for derby!!

The Sydney league has been playing as a leauge for longer than our Wellington girls (I think), so I thought they would probably win, but man did the kiwi girls give them a run for their money! It was the best game I have seen so far. The Assassions are amazing on defence, but Richter City held there own.

After an impressive game, the Assassins came out on top with a 164-128 victory. But that score in derby is a very close game.

Freaking AWESOME!!

♥ Roller Derby Shirts ♥

So my friends and I wanted roller derby shirts for last nights bout so my amazing artist friend designed this roller derby skull and I put it onto some tops.

The hardest part was making the stencils - because I only had one day to do three shirts I just made temporary ones with A3 paper, so they looked like this:

then do the white paint first (twice to try and make it stand out):

Then the helmets followed by the star and strap and they turned out something like this:

And my lovely model JJ:

Richter City presents: The Rubble Rouser

Last nights roller derby bout in Wellington was AMAZING! The besties and I wore our matching t-shirts and made a sign

First up was the opening act - Infinite Dance Crew, a teenage Hip Hop dance group who were actually insanely talented and lots of fun to watch:

Smash Malice vs. Brutal Pageant. It was a fantastic game, with Brutal Pageant taking an early lead and keeping it throughout the game (please excuse the quality of the photos, my camera is not the best of quality and the girls move really fast!):

Brutal Pageant Won (YAY) and Fun (with a capital F) was had by all!:

And we even won a t-shirt for our sign!

So if you get the chance to go see a bout, or even better - play in a league - then just do it. It is an exciting sport and is gaining popularity in NZ, so check it out!

It's Hard to be Blue when Life is this Pink

I got my pink hair back! I have been sad without my pink for the past year o it feels good to have it back again (although I may have to get the girls to do a little bit more on Friday night to add just a bit more colour up the top)

Also my amazingly talented bestie designed this print for me that I am going to put on a few t-shirts tomorrow for the weekends roller derby (w00t!!)
Check it:

♥ Lost: My Roller Derby Virginity ♥

♥ So on Saturday night I saw my first ever live roller derby bout. It was the Wellington league's Richter City Shakedown: Stop Drop and Roll.
Being the huge nerds we are, we got there right when the doors opened so we managed to get seats in the front row so the view was brilliant!

Now Richter City Roller Derby was established in 2007, and has been growing in popularity since then. In 2009 they sold a little over 4,000 tickets to the three bouts, which was impressive enough, but this year there was close to that in the crowd at the first bout alone. IMPRESSED MUCH!

Leopard print clad Smash Malice were playing to defend there title from last year against the "disgraced beauty queens", the hot pink wearing, Brutal Pageant. Because we had yet to watch a live game my friends and I had to quickly decide on a team to support, so, because they were the underdogs, we picked Brutal Pagent and away we went.

The game was amazing to watch, turning me and all of my friends (who usually don't enjoy sport) into screaming fangirls, and by the end of the night we had lost our voices.

The jammers were all amazing, with my favourite players of the night being Perky Nah Nah and Suffer Jet, but all the ladies playing were impressive and inspirational. It was a very close game, with quite a few penalties meaning that there were a few (power jams?) where there was only one jammer on the track picking up ALOT of points. The final score was an impressive 103 to 125 to Brutal Pageant, and the crowd loved it.

So the next bout is September 4th, so it looks like another trip down to Wellington then. ♥

♥ Newbie Sk8er + Beadaholic ♥

♥♥♥ So, I attended my first roller derby practice yesterday with the Bay City Rollers (http://tiny.cc/ze0un) and it was both enjoyable and grueling. As I have never skated before It will still be a LONG time till I am practicing with the derby girls, so I spent the entire practice down one end of the warehouse (along with another newbie) to practice getting my balance while skating, and will probably be there for another few weeks at least. Next week my goal is to be able to learn how to turn on the skates, and to practice stopping properly.

I had two big tumbles in front of everybody (embarrassing, but it happens to everyone) and I lost track of how many times I fell over while practicing by myself, but I had my knee pads on so I was good. Because my skates are so horrible (One of the girls said that it looked like they had a twisted axle or something like that) I have to use one of the spare pairs until I get my own, and getting used to new skates takes a bit. But it was good and everyone there is very friendly and encouraging. Hopefully in a few weeks time I will be able to practice with the girls, and maybe I will be ready for the start of the season this time next year (fingers crossed). Until then, I will struggle along and try not to give up (because catching up with the others might take a while, and I am usually the type of girl who tends to give up easily). But I am enjoying watching the other girls, I just can't wait until I am good enough to play with them. ♥♥♥

Also, just a little side note: I am going into Napier of Wednesday to buy more supplies to make more clips (YAY!) so I shall spend my time between then and Jenni arriving furiously making clips (so how much should I sell them for on trade me? should I sell them as singles or in pairs? HELP please).

And FINALLY While I was visiting my Grandmother on Saturday I found that she was using the most adorable silver charms on some of her bracelets (she makes VERY beautiful jewelery, I will post a blog about some of her stuff one day). They are cute little pistols! Even though she had used all hers up, she told me where I could order some of my own. Now its a kiwi site so postage will be cheap, and it is only $4 for 10 pistols (40cents each, what the hells that's so cheap!). However she is out of stock :( so as soon as they are in stock I am going to buy two sets and turn them into earring (and I know what I want them to look like!) so I am going to post a link to this site for any one who is interested in crafty stuff like me: http://www.beadaholic.co.nz
